French-German Friendship

Celebration of the 55th anniversary of the Élysée Treaty and

the French-German Friendship

Eurocampus of Manila – January 22, 2018

Signed on 22 January 1963 by General DE GAULLE and Chancellor ADENAUER, Elysée Treaty defined the organisation and principles of cooperation between France and the Federal Republic of Germany in the fields of Foreign Affairs, Defense, Education and Youth. It was intended to seal the reconciliation between the two states. Today, it remains a strong symbol of French-German friendship.

The Eurocampus project was born in 1992 under the impetus of several French personalities in the Philippines: His Excellency Olivier GAUSSOT, Ambassador of France to the Philippines and Micronesia, Alain CHANCERELLE, Louis-Paul HEUSSAFF (present this Friday 22 January) and Philippe GAUTHIER. They formed the group of founding members of this ambitious Franco-German project, the first of its kind in the world.

The Manila Eurocampus today celebrated French-German friendship on the occasion of the commemoration of the 55th anniversary of the Elysée Treaty. On this occasion, an exhibition, a program prepared by the students of the two schools and a friendly football match illustrated the history and strong links developed by the Treaty between two friendly countries, Germany and France.

His Excellency the German Ambassador Dr. Gordon Kricke and His Excellency the French Ambassador Nicolas Galey honoured the event with their presence, each delivering a speech highlighting the importance of Franco-German friendship. Two of the founding fathers of the Eurocampus, Mr. Michael Räuber and Mr. Louis-Paul Heussaff were also present to attend the ceremony.

Students from the German European School Manila (GESM) and the Lycée Français de Manille (LFM) had prepared presentations explaining why learning French and German was so important to them. Eurocampus can thus pride itself not only on providing its students with excellent language skills, but also on contributing on a daily basis, thanks to the cooperation that exists between our two schools, to a generous French-German project.

The "Golden Pen" writing competition, organised by the Eurocampus Library Manila, composed of the libraries of the German and French schools, was officially launched during the event. Finally, prizes were awarded to students who participated in the "Quiz of the Élysée Treaty".

The programme ended with a football match where the two ambassadors kicked off.

This year, on the occasion of the 55th anniversary of the Elysée Treaty, the President of the French Republic and the Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany reaffirmed their determination to further deepen cooperation between France and Germany, in line with the founding spirit of concrete cooperation and rapprochement of citizens of the Elysée Treaty.

Celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, the Manila Eurocampus project is an example of successful cooperation.
